Week One at Village U

After months of planning and preparing for our new intern program, which we proudly launched as “Village U”, it all came down to last Tuesday, September 6 when the interns walked through our doors for the first time.

Ten young men and women arrived, all with different expectations and goals, ready to jump into a year of ministry and theological training. During our orientation morning, new backpacks were handed out and class expectations were established, but most importantly, connections started to form between the interns and a team began to take shape. We didn’t waste any time and threw the interns into the deep end. Within the first week, I had the privilege of teaching on the necessity of soul care in our Spiritual Formation class, Pastor Mark explained a tactful approach to defending one’s faith in Apologetics class, and Pastor Jeremy set the foundation for understanding Old Testament literature in Genesis.

The week wrapped up with interns breaking out into their ministry tracks. This is their chance to learn ministry skills under the mentorship of our various staff leaders. These tracks varied from music theory training to understanding the philosophy of kids ministry.

We’ve had a chance to pray as a staff for the interns and get to know them over a staff lunch. Personally, the highlight of the week was seeing the interns transition from being naturally cautious and uncertain on day one, to seamlessly functioning and connecting as a part of the Village team by the end of the week. There is already genuine excitement, not only for the potential these young people have, but for how God will profoundly work in and through them during their year at Village U. I can’t wait to see what God has planned!
